THE NEWBERG REPORT
It's been less than a year, but at this point the Rangers wouldn't ask for a
do-over on any of the pitchers they drafted on Day One of last June's draft
and signed:
1 (17). Blake Beavan, RHP, Irving High School (area scout: Jay Eddings)
1 (24). Michael Main, RHP, DeLand High School (Fla.) (area scout: Guy
DeMutis)
1 Supp. (44). Neil Ramirez, RHP, Kempsville High School (Va.) (area scout:
Russ Ardolina)
1 Supp. (54). Tommy Hunter, RHP, Univ. of Alabama (area scout: Jeff Wood)
3. Evan Reed (110), RHP, Cal Poly (area scout: Todd Guggiana)
One year ago today, Reed, the least heralded of the group, pitched the ninth
inning of a 12-0 Cal Poly win over UC Irvine. Yesterday, Reed was summoned
from Clinton to make an emergency start for Frisco in the back end of a
doubleheader, and all he did was shut Arkansas out on four hits and no walks
over five innings, fanning three. That followed the six scoreless innings
he fired for the LumberKings on April 5, a game in which he scattered four
Cedar Rapids hits, walking two and setting six down on strikes. That
followed the 1-1, 1.91 record he posted last summer between Spokane and
Clinton, yielding only 18 hits and 16 walks in 37.2 innings, punching out
34.
Reed hasn't allowed a home run in two years. Nobody took him deep in 42.1
innings during his final season at Cal Poly, and Reed hasn't watched anyone
circle the bases as a professional.
One year ago today, Jarrod Saltalamacchia's AA Mississippi Braves had the
day off. He was hitting .333/.471/.778 and was two weeks away from an
eye-opening promotion at age 21 to Atlanta.
One year ago today, Elvis Andrus's Class A Myrtle Beach Pelicans were rained
out, giving the 18-year-old shortstop a day off from his relatively sluggish
.257/.333/.371 start (which would plummet to .196/.281/.275 before moving in
the right direction).
One year ago today, Max Ramirez's Class A Kinston Indians were washed out as
well, giving the catcher a break from a punchless .296/.424/.333 start that
included one extra base hit in 27 at-bats.
Today, they are no longer Braves or Indians property, instead kicking tail
in the Rangers system and making noise that they might need a new challenge.
Saltalamacchia is tearing Pacific Coast League pitching up, hitting
.364/.447/.667. At Frisco, Andrus has hits in 10 of the first 11 AA games
of his career and sports a .326/.380/.391 line. His Frisco teammate Ramirez
sits at .263/.391/.579, finding himself in the top 10 in the Texas League in
total bases and OPS.
And both Andrus and Ramirez are bowing down to Chris Davis, back from a
two-day absence with a sore wrist and hitting .353/.371/.647 for the
RoughRiders. A year ago today, he sat at .257/.317/.657 for High A
Bakersfield.
It's hard to predict where Reed will be one year from today, not to mention
Beavan, Main, Neil Ramirez, or Hunter.
I have a pretty good idea what uniform Saltalamacchia will be wearing one
year from today. But I won't even begin to guess where Andrus, Max Ramirez,
and Davis could be.

And 3 strikeouts to boot.
Existing on this earth as a Rangers fan is the most maddening hobby ever. I seriously may need to give this up for my health. Every move seems to blow up in their face. They sub Broussard for Botts at first, apparently for defensive purposes. So, what happens? Broussard immediately botches a possible double play to end the inning. 2 runs score, game tied. I'm insane now.

I'm pretty anti-Broussard, but I don't want to tell Ric that I think Botts should have the position full-time...I'm afraid I'll get Dickeyised for it...

What a day Hamilton and Bradley had.
Hamilton 4-7 and a walk, 2RBI and 2 Doubles; raising his average to .311.
Bradley 2-3 and 5 BB, 1 R
Nice substitutions by Wash to be able to PH for Broussard (who was not happy) and use Cat at first.

| I just never really understood why JD got Broussard, a career .265 hitter with medicore power potential.

If Botts had more nights like last night, I'd change my mind.
I can certainly see why you couldn't count on that and look to cover yourself, though. Can't you?

THE NEWBERG REPORT
I'm pretty sure it doesn't count as a Pyhrric victory when it's a fan on whom the toll is taken before being rewarded with what really does feel like a character win, but this morning sort of feels like the first couple days after those weekend softball doubleheaders ("[I'm w]ay too tired. And I love it. Sports soreness is the greatest.")
Kason Gabbard, Wes Littleton, Franklyn German, and C.J. Wilson, thank you.
Jason Botts, Josh Hamilton, Milton Bradley (five walks, all in the seventh inning and later!), and Frank Catalanotto, you did more than your fair share. Thanks.
You too, A.J. Burnett.
I was thinking at about the time that last night's game started feeling like a West Coast Special that this morning's report would be about Neftali Feliz, Fabio Castillo, Warner Madrigal, Jesse Carlson, and Armando Galarraga, with some Cristian Santana and Jose Vallejo mixed in, but like those Sunday afternoons I wrote about on March 30, I'm far too worn out to go there this morning.
Way too sports-tired. And I love it.

I have no problem with contingency plans.
But in order to have a contingency for Botts, then Botts must first start.

+10
The last three games I've seen some of the most inept, fumbling, and amateurish baseball in 40+ years of watching the game. And the basics were supposed to be Wash's strong suit. His "how you guys spin it" postgame response says much. "It's going to get better". Like, when? End of last year? In Arizona, when these guys got a full Spring in the "new" system under their belts? New? You mean like watching your base coach, covering the bag, turning a double play, keeping the ball from going to the fence - as in, "new" only if you've never played Little League or Pony?
I hoped for Trey. I want to like Wash. I want him to succeed. I still pull for the Rangers. But I cancelled my season tickets after last year. I'm a part-time ticket buyer now, and will be as long as they play part-time fundamentals.

According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Texas has purchased the contract of infielder German Duran and will start him at third base tonight, opting to keep Hank Blalock off the Toronto turf after he exited last night’s game with lower back discomfort.
The active roster move to accommodate Duran’s arrival will apparently be the placement of outfielder Marlon Byrd on the 15-day disabled list with a sore left knee. As for the 40-man roster, which Duran was not on (as he didn’t yet need to occupy a spot this winter for Rule 5 purposes), a player will need to be removed to make room for Duran. While that could mean that someone is in danger of being designated for assignment, there’s also the possibility that a player like Thomas Diamond or Travis Metcalf could be shifted to the 60-day disabled list, which would clear the necessary roster spot.
More details when the corresponding 40-man roster move is made.
Jamey
P.S. Jason Botts is back in the starting lineup tonight.
