(CNN) -- More than 200,000 children were spanked or paddled in U.S. schools during the past school year, human rights groups reported Wednesday.

"Every public school needs effective methods of discipline, but beating kids teaches violence,

BEATING? give me a break, at times all kids need a swat to get their attention. I know it's not popular to advocate spanking, but sometimes an attention getter is needed.

I am not anti-spanking but I believe it should be used sparingly.  If I have to smack William's hand so he will not reach into the dogs mouth then so be it.  Having said that...NO-ONE better spank my kid but me.  If I need to come down to school and swat his butt mid-day I will.  But if I ever catch someone whacking my kid they better run and Sam better get the bail money ready.

Being a first time mommy, I see your point, but if young William gets a bit out of hand later in life you may see the need for a more firm hand being applied to his bottom.

I remember every time out I got as a kid----NOT!
I do actually remember most of the spankings because they left an impression on me.
I did not routinely spank my kids, because most of the time merely raising my voice was enough. But when they needed a spanking, they got a quick swat on the butt. If that makes me less of a parent in some peoples eyes so be it.

I have nothing against "spankings", but at school I don't think they are as effective as other form's of punishment. At least they weren't in my case.

Detention, extra school/homework, missing recess (in the earlier years), and running laps are what I hated. We would usually joke around with our buddies after receiving "licks" and if we received a detention we would go and get it "burned off" if we could.

Now they have "time outs" and "in building suspensions". Not hardly a deterrent.

We hoped my mother would spank us, so my father wouldn't. Did not happen that way very often.

Bulls***.  Schools have other ways to keep children in line.  I agree with Aspiring Lush...nobody better hit my kid...PERIOD.  If the educators cannot stay professional then they should find another line of work.  Businesses keep employees, even school age, in line.  When was the last time you walked into a business and had to wait for assistance because the manager was paddling the employee?  unless it was one of those types of establishments.

And they wondered why I kept a coffee can full of fireplace ashes on my desk. I always explained that it was the kids who pi**ed me off the year before.

My father only hit me twice and I remember both of them. We didn't spank our kids much but my wife used a fly swatter on their diapers, or seat of their pants to get attention. We never hit skin, we weren't out to harm them. One time she grabbed a "Mattel Hot Wheels hot wheels track, a long piece of plastic, and swatted our youngest. He still talks about his "beating". He laughs about it, but he remembers it. We never left a mark but we left an impression. My kids do the same thing to their kids, NO MARKS nothing that strong, but showing disapproval of their actions YES.

I agree with Hopper, I got swats in elementary school and jr. high and I deserved them everytime and my parents didn't have a problem with it, usually got them again when I got home.

Those were the rules going in and everyone knew it students and parents alike.  Making a kid go "sit in his/her room" doesn't always do the trick.

Also, like Big Tex said...can't touch'em, can't flunck'em.........and the Kids all know this.

A business can escort you out the door never to return even to purchase something.
Parents have removed the power of the schools by the attitude that "their little darlings never get out of line"
If the parents could control the children, the children would not be in a position to recieve punishment from the school.

First...where did I ever say my "little darlings" never got out of line?  Parents should be in the business of parenting.  Schools are in the business of educating...not teaching morals, being role models, etc..  Students who are constant problems can, and are, sent to the alternative campuses in the district.

And if you think a business like Walmart can keep anyone from going into any of their stores and making a purchase using cash you are a fool.  It would require they take a photo of EVERY "problem" person, keep them in a central database and implement facial recognition software and equipment at all their entrances...at every store...to keep someone from walking in.  Even a mom-and-pop would need to have the owner or dedicated employee there 100% of the time doing nothing more watching the people walking in the door...yea, like they can afford that.  Give me a break.

And there lies most of the problem, cause it used to not be like that.

Some of the teachers and coaches I had growing up has HUGE impacts on my life, they way I treated others, treated adults, sportsmanship, etc, etc, etc....

I banned plenty of people from my bars and restaraunts when I ran them.  Told them never to come back and if I ever came in and saw them, I told them to leave.

Here are the rules to the school....you know it coming in, you don't like, put your kids in Private School and pay to have them whopped......LOL....I have been down that road also.

Gosh, how times have changed.  When we were kids, if we got in trouble at school, there was punishment at home.
