Some men showed up at my daughters house up in Utah yesterday and installed a new meter on her home.  THey were drilling holes in the stucco and had this thing on the wall when she drove up.  she asked them what they were doing, and they said they were installing the new Cool Keeper.  She asked them why and they said some one in their home had authorized it.  She asked who and they couldn't tell her, but they assured her it was free and she would get a $20 credit for having it.  She went in and called and no one could tell her who signed up for it.  She told them to get it off her house NOW.

What the program is, is a new meter that monitors the electrical usage of your home and all the other homes in your neighborhood.  When usage gets high, it will shut down your AC unit in 15 min intervals so that it can spread the power over a larger area.  They also assure you that your fan will stay on and you shouldn't really notice it being off for 15 mins then on 15 mins then off etc.  as your temp will only fluctuate from 1-10 degrees during that time.

she told them that if they had damaged their new home they were gong to pay to have it repaired and repainted and she woudl not have them telling her when she can keep the air on or turn it off.  They have the new baby and 4 other kids.  She says she is conservative as it is, and NO ONE is going to have that kind of control over her home.

since they couldn't show any work order signed by any one in their home, they were back out this morning and took it down and fixed the holes.

Have you heard about this type of new meter?  I am wondering if the ones Oncor is putting in will have that kind of ability.  The one she had is wireless and they put a control on the main line from the AC unit into her home. They took it off too.

I wouldn't allow it on my home, but this ONCOR one is bugging me already and I dont' even have it installed.

WOuld you let them put one of these on your home?

That sounds like a great way to kill a compressor.

I spent a lot of money for a sophisticated two stage heat pump for my house.  If anybody tries to do anything to bypass my system's controls, I might have to shoot them.

Of course, Obamanation might just outlaw all A/C systems and make all of this moot.

Different net but same meter, I betcha

Landis+Gyr announced major
smart meter contract with AEP Texas

Landis+Gyr, one of the largest providers of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and energy management solutions in the world, has announced a five-year smart metering contract with AEP Texas.  AEP Texas is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Electric Power (AEP) one of the largest utilities in the country.

The contract calls for Landis+Gyr to deploy its Gridstream smart meter solution throughout the AEP Texas service area.  The solution will be made up of 700,000 networked smart meters, capable of communicating bi-directionally, and giving more than 2 million customers the ability to monitor and manage their energy consumption.

The Gridstream deployment includes the two-way network infrastructure that will facilitate communications between customers and AEP Texas, digital smart meters capable of remote access and load limiting, and wireless connectivity to smart devices in the home.

AEP Texas will have the ability to remotely connect and disconnect power – a cost-saving option for the vast service area – and will be able to transmit pricing signals in real time.  Automated load management will also be an option.

Its coming, and if your provider decides to do it there is nothing you can do about it if you decide to stay on the grid. You have to have a meter, and they can install any type they want.

I do not know if they have the right to hook up to anything other than your main service line into the house, but I imagine not.

The next paragraph tells the real story. The green nuts have forbidden us from developing more energy production. No nuclear plants(the real green solution), Obama's cap and trade will kill coal producers, and raise the price of current energy.

“As the demand for electricity continues to outpace development of energy resources, using smart grid technologies to improve energy management is a critical piece to ensuring our energy future,”

they cant turn off your ac while leaving other things running in your house unless they tamper with the wiring on your side of the meter...somethings missing here.

Like allowing the "Tollway Authority" to install a device on your car that shuts it off for ten minute intervals at random "peak usage" periods to keep the Tollway traffic down.

fuss and complain, etc. . . better understand more fully this "CRAP" & TEADE bill.
if the senate does not vote it down then more than smart meters and controlling AC is going to happen. There is so much hidden within this bill. The liberals will tell you this is a great bill and necessary but it is a TAX TAX TAX bill.

more on this bill. HIDDEN items. better get ready:

ok they are installing extra controls for your ac system in a load shedding scheme.

Im sure this does work well to shed load requirements and aid the power companies

it might even keep some transformers from blwoing up in the heat of the day.

they will pay you 20 bucks to participate

I wouldnt do it myself but for some people that 20 might make sense.

It is only $20 a year, and the worst part is that they turn it on and off in 15 min increments where my daughter lives. Can you imagine your AC not being on 30 mins of every hour here in Texas in the summer.  NOPE I WON"T DO IT.  I conserve but I won't allow them to do it for me.

Call me crazy, pretty soon they will be making criminals out law abiding people. Why? Everyday usage(as we know it now) will be a crime.

I'll see ol' Gardasil Rick this evening. He is supposed to be at our local TEA Party. My daughter will also be participating at our TEA Party as a musician.

I just changed out my 14 year old 12 SEER 5 ton Trane heat pump with a new Rheem 16 SEER 5 ton 2 stage system and I feel the same way.  FYI : old unit pulled 29 amps when cooling, new unit pulls 12 amps in low and 14.6 amps in high.  I've only seen it go to high cool when I lower the temp. set point 2 degrees.

I think the gov. will come out and say the average home is so many sq. ft. and should use so many kw's of electricity monthly, if you exceed that amount by a preset % the rate of overage doubles, exceed next preset amount - doubles again, and so on.  I'm trying to get ahead of the coming gov. control.
